America’s Transportation Experience at Hershey is dedicated to preserving and presenting the motoring legacy. Road maps make up a vital component of that legacy. We’re pleased to team with the Road Map Collectors Association to connect transportation enthusiasts with enduring road map history.
With the advent of affordable automobiles, road maps spawned a new trend in American culture: the road trip. From service/gas stations providing wayfinding to government agencies promoting scenic and cultural wonders, travelers came to expect guidance from road maps. Companies such as Rand McNally, H.M. Gousha, and General Drafting distributed millions of maps, and maps’ creativity, artistry, and practicality made them popular collector items then and today.
