Automobile enthusiasts come in all ages and sizes. Likewise, the same is true for cars made for children. Many kids got their first set of wheels at a very early age. Beginning in the 1890s and continuing today, many fell in love with cars while enjoying their first scoot-along toys, pedal cars, and go-karts — and for good reason!
These unique modes of transportation are not only adorable but also incredibly fun for kids. Even among adults, there’s a deep appreciation for these childhood classics. Pedal cars and go-karts reached their peak in the 20s and 30s. A spike in popularity and development also followed WWI. Every post-war child wanted one, and toy stores were ready to meet the demand. As time went by they offered an array of colors, makes, and models mimicking real vehicles. From fire engines to racing cars, to airplanes, kids fell in love with them. In the 60s, many of the toy vehicles had lights, chrome details, hood ornaments, convertible tops, fancy tires, and horns.
