The Sports Car in America May 22 - October 11, 2009

Ask someone just what constitutes a “sports car” and you are bound to receive a wide variety of answers.  Some will identify with performance oriented cars like Chevrolet’s Corvette or anything built by the likes of Lamborghini, Alfa-Romeo, Ferrari and a host of other companies that reside chiefly in Europe and offer seating for two.  Some will include muscular cars like the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger in this group, arguing that their back seat is more of a luggage compartment than actual seating for additional passengers.  Ask a car enthusiast, particularly one who is into racing and they will tell you that a true sports car is a purpose-built two-seater with a history of success in motor racing.  The Antique Auto Museum in Hershey has its own take on the subject and is hosting a spectacular 28 car exhibition covering a sixty-year history of sports cars in America.

Fast from the Past: The Competition Motorcycles of Yesteryear

No one knows exactly when the first motorcycle race took place, but many believe it was when the second motorcycle was built.  It’s just that kind of vehicle.  Its speed, power, and maneuverability often bring out the competitive edge and fun-loving nature of its rider, and when two get together, that’s enough to make a race.  And it’s always been that way.  Since their inception late in the 19th century, motorcycles have been both purpose-built and modified for competitive use, a fact that will be celebrated by the Antique Motorcycle Club of America (AMCA) in its next exhibit at the Antique Automobile Club of America Museum at Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Museum to Receive Landmark Donation - 1929 Model A Roadster from Original Owner

Museum Set to Receive Landmark Donation
1929 Model A Ford Roadster left to Museum by Original Owner
Car to Arrive on Saturday, May 2nd at 2:00 pm

Do you wish you still had your first car?  Southeastern Pennsylvanian, Frank Hartmaier never had this regret because he kept his new 1929 Ford for 80 years!  While some drivers think back nostalgically and yearn for their first ride, the reality for most people is much different.  For many, their first vehicle was an object of necessity purchased with scraped-together funds and maintained on a shoe-string budget.  It was a utilitarian object used to get you to work and sometimes for fun, but it was rarely the car of your dreams.  The first car was, and continues to be, a right of passage, a stepping stone to bigger and better things.

Friends and family members have detailed the Model A and made all the arrangements for its delivery to the Museum.  It will join our collection at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 2nd with a small dedication and ceremony that is open to the press and any museum visitors who are present.

From Roads to Rails Custom Train Display - Tuckerville, USA

All Aboard!  A custom train display is scheduled to roll out at the Antique Auto Museum at Hershey on November 15, 2008.  It’s yet another opportunity to cruise through time – on rails --  at the AACA Museum during the holiday season.
Travel back in time as these locomotives take you to “Tuckerville, USA” the Museum’s vision of small-town America in the 1950s.  There are stores, factories, shops, a farm, and a railroad yard that features an automated turntable and locomotive repair shop.  Other automated features include a gas station, Ford garage, a Drive-In restaurant and construction site complete with bulldozers.  For our younger visitors, Thomas the Tank Engine is a popular attraction.   Tuckerville is surrounded by rails, on which run a variety of vintage model trains manufactured by Lionel and Williams, Rail King and now Bachmann in a combination of O-gauge and HO-gauge sizes.

Food and Toy "DRIVE" Now - December 5, 2008 at the AACA Museum

The AACA Museum is again teaming up with Carry the Light Ministries of Mechanicsburg to help sponsor a Food & Toy “DRIVE”.   The goal of the “DRIVE” will be to provide about 50 (hopefully more) needy families in the community with groceries and toys to help throughout the holiday season.  An antique pick up truck is parked in the Museum’s lobby and we’re looking to fill the truck with items for families in need.
